Early Life and Artistic Training
Paul Maas enters the world on August 10, 1890, in Laeken, Belgium. He is the only child born to Achille Maas, a businessman from the bourgeoisie of Moerbeke, and Louise Tedesco, who comes from a family of magistrates. His path seems set from the start. His father expects him to eventually take over the family's perfume business.
The academic years at the atheneum of Brussels introduce him to Albert Guislain. By 1908, the focus shifts toward language; Maas spends six months in Berlin to master German. He returns to Brussels and enrolls at the Université libre de Bruxelles, where he pursues courses in sociology and law. He even co-founds a literary magazine with fellow students, publishing several of his own poems. However, the academic life is short-lived. After two years, he abandons his studies.
The pressure of family expectation leads him to Paris. On his father's urging, Paul Maas undertakes an internship within the luxury perfumery industry. The city offers more than just professional training. During this period, he spends significant time in the Louvre, absorbing the works housed within its walls.
Artistic Development and Movements
The First World War disrupts his trajectory. Wounded in combat, Maas is evacuated to London, a displacement that shifts his surroundings before he and his family eventually move to Amsterdam. In the Netherlands, a meeting with Rik Wouters provides the necessary impetus to abandon other pursuits and dedicate himself entirely to painting.
His path leads back toward the Belgian landscape. Between 1922 and 1933, he maintains a close connection to the group of painters led by Valerius De Saedeleer in Etikhove. This period of association precedes a sharp stylistic shift. By 1935, the work undergoes a transformation; the brushwork becomes aggressive and tormented. He begins to sketch human figures with a few decisive strokes, rendering them as entities that barely emerge from the background. These subjects—crowds, nudes, and the beach—are rendered with an expressive force that aligns his output with the sensibilities of Oskar Kokoschka and Chaïm Soutine.
As a Belgian expressionist painter and draftsman, his presence in the formal art scene remains steady. He participates in the Salon des Expressionnistes in 1952, marking his continued engagement with the movement's core tenets.
Technique and Artistic Style
The brushwork undergoes a sharp transformation. By 1935, the compositions turn aggressive and tormented. He abandons detailed rendering for a more skeletal approach, sketching human figures with a few decisive strokes. These figures barely emerge from the background, appearing as ghostly silhouettes that struggle against the surrounding space. This economy of line creates a sense of tension, where the subject matter is defined more by its energy than by its anatomical precision. He imbues these forms with an intense, expressive strength that pushes the boundaries of representation.
His focus remains fixed on the human condition within specific environments. He populates his canvases with massive crowds, the starkness of the beach, and the vulnerability of nudes. There is a heavy, visceral quality to these subjects, a stylistic leaning that mirrors the raw intensity found in the works of Oskar Kokoschka and Chaïm Soutine. While his early years followed different paths, his mature output moves toward the abstract, stripping away the unnecessary to find the core of the movement and the emotion within the mass of figures.
