      The Weight of the Polder

In the flat, open stretches of the Netherlands, where the horizon is often marked only by a single mast or a lone farm, Piet Tuytel finds a sense of scale. Born in Alblasserdam in 1956, his work has always been a way of navigating the space between what is heavy and what is empty. He began with a foundation in drawing, manual work, and textile forms, later refining his practice at Ateliers ’63 in Haarlem. His early years were spent working with the raw, gritty materials of construction: mastic, tar, concrete, and scaffolding parts. These were not delicate things. He moved large objects, using bathtubs and oil tanks to explore how mass occupies a room.

There is a specific tension in his approach to material. He looks at the landscape and sees the need to anchor the gaze, much like driving pegs into the ground to make sense of a vast, empty field. His work often feels as though it has been found rather than manufactured, a way of bringing the industrial into a human context. He has spent years teaching at various art academies, sharing the technicalities of form while his own practice moved toward a more distilled language of abstraction.

      Material and Form

The evolution of his practice shows a shift from the heavy and the industrial toward the intimate and the structural. He has moved through several distinct phases of material exploration:

      • Early works utilizing heavy substances like tar, concrete, and scaffolding.
      • A period focused on objects related to the human environment, such as tables, chairs, and sinks.
      • Recent constructions using H and T beams, creating a steel script of shapes.

His sculptures do not rely on pedestals to claim importance. Instead, they sit directly in the environment, sometimes appearing as if they might tip or slide if approached too quickly. There is a physical risk in the way he balances steel, creating a sense of weightlessness even when the material is undeniably heavy. He works with the body, often lifting these massive elements to find the exact point where they achieve a sense of proportion.

      The Balance of Space

His recent work has become a study in the relationship between matter and void. By using industrial H and T beams, he has developed an alphabet of images that feel both classic and minimalist. These pieces are not merely objects; they are part of a larger dialogue regarding the space they inhabit. He seeks a specific equilibrium, a way to make the heavy feel light and the solid feel as though it is breathing. It is a practice of finding the point where the sum of the parts creates something entirely different from the individual components.
