The Life and Career of Rainer Wittenborn

Born in Berlin, Germany, in 1941, Rainer Wittenborn has spent much of his life navigating the intersections of visual art and academic instruction. His early years in Berlin provided the foundation for a career that would eventually lead him to Munich, where he remains a resident today. As a painter and graphic artist, his practice has always been deeply tied to the act of seeing and recording the world around him.

Beyond his personal studio practice, Wittenborn has dedicated a significant portion of his professional life to the classroom. He served as a professor at the TU München, shaping the minds of students through his expertise in art and design. This role as a university teacher allowed him to bridge the gap between the practical application of graphic arts and the theoretical frameworks of contemporary art, influencing a generation of practitioners through his tenure until his retirement.

His life has been marked by a steady presence in the German art scene, moving from the formative years of his youth in Berlin to a settled life in Munich. Whether working with a brush or teaching in a lecture hall, Wittenborn has maintained a consistent commitment to his craft. His work as a conceptual artist and graphic artist reflects a life spent observing the nuances of form and the complexities of human environments.

      Artistic Collaborations and Research

Wittenborn’s practice has often been shaped by the perspectives of others. In his early years, he worked alongside the architect Thomas Herzog and the conceptual artist Nikolaus Lang. These early professional connections helped establish a foundation for a career that would eventually move toward more immersive, investigative methods of creation.

His approach to subject matter became increasingly tied to the lives of people living on the margins of modern industry. In the 1980s, he teamed up with a journalist to document the lives of the Cree Indians in Canada. This period of study was supported by the Goethe-Institut, which helped facilitate a research trip to Québec between August and December 1979. His method during these times was almost ethnographic; he did not merely observe from a distance but sought to understand different cultures by living among indigenous people for extended periods.

This deep immersion allowed him to bring a specific awareness of cultural boundaries into his work. By integrating elements of nature, maps, and documents, he explored the connections between human existence and the natural world. His time in the north resulted in installations that used various materials to address the changing landscapes and the people who inhabit them.

      Exhibitions and Recognition

Wittenborn’s presence in the art world was marked by significant institutional recognition early in his career. In 1971, he was awarded a scholarship from the Deutsche Akademie Villa Massimo, a period that allowed him to further his development. His growing reputation led to his inclusion in documenta 6 in Kassel in 1977, a major milestone that placed his work alongside many of his contemporaries in a highly respected setting.

His reach extended well beyond Germany, reaching audiences in the United States and Italy. In 1995, he held a solo exhibition at the Hessel Museum of Art at Bard College in Annandale-on-Hudson, New York. Later, in 2000, his work was featured at the Museo d'arte contemporanea Villa Croce in Genoa, Italy, during an exploration of borders titled De finibus terrae. South-North.

Throughout his career, he received several honors for his contributions to the field. These include the Fritz-Winter-Preis, which recognized his skill and dedication to his practice. His work has also been part of various group exhibitions in cities like Munich, Hamburg, and Stuttgart, often exploring themes of mythology and the relationship between humans and nature.

      Notable Works and Collections

The physical presence of Wittenborn's work often carries a significant scale that commands the space it occupies. One such piece, Military Cloud Cover, was created in 1971. This large-scale canvas measures 182 x 200 cm and remains a notable part of the Bayerische Staatsgemäldesammlungen – Sammlung Moderne Kunst in der Pinakothek der Moderne München. It entered the collection in 1973 as a gift from Rolf Becker of Baierbrunn.

His practice has also involved complex installations that move beyond the traditional frame. In his project Amazon of the North: James Bay Revisited, he integrated paintings and drawings with photographs, maps, and documents. This work utilized elements of nature and indigenous artwork to address the changing landscape of northern Quebec and Labrador. In other installations, such as Creatures of the North: Seal-Species or Sub-Species, he suspended enlarged photo cutouts of antique European engravings of freshwater seals in midair. These pieces often incorporated plastic floats and sealskin lines used in native fishing practices, alongside a surveyor’s rod, to create a specific sense of place and connection to the natural world.
