      A Life Rooted in Dordrecht

Roland Larij entered the world on December 22, 1855, in Dordrecht, a city where art was woven into the very fabric of his family. He was born into a lineage of painters, growing up alongside his brother Cor Larij and surrounded by the quiet rhythms of a creative household. This early immersion in color and form provided a foundation that would guide him throughout his life.

His formal training took him away from the familiar streets of Dordrecht to the Academy in Antwerp. There, he studied under Edgar Farazijn, a teacher who helped shape his approach to the canvas. While his roots remained in his home city, Larij often sought inspiration in different landscapes, traveling from Dordrecht to Heeze in Brabant and spending his summer months in Katwijk and Drenthe.

      The Atmosphere of the Land

Larij’s work focused on the quiet, often overlooked corners of the natural and domestic world. He found deep meaning in the stillness of farm interiors, the texture of a forest, or the open expanse of a heath. His paintings were not merely records of places, but attempts to capture a specific mood or a passing moment of light.

His style was shaped by his interactions with other painters of his era, such as de Marissen, Mauve, and Israels. From these influences, he adopted a free and loose technique that allowed him to focus on the atmosphere of his subjects. Whether he was working on an oil painting of a farm kitchen or a detailed draughtsmanship piece, his attention remained fixed on the feeling of the scene.

A Legacy in Paint and Etching

As a painter, draughtsman, and etcher, Larij left behind a body of work that reflects the Hague School style. His subjects ranged from portraits to the humble details of rural life, such as his 1915 work Ploegossen, which is held in the Dordrechts Museum. His ability to translate the weight of a landscape or the intimacy of an interior onto canvas remains his most lasting contribution.

Larij passed away in Dordrecht on December 23, 1932, marking the end of a life dedicated to observing the world around him. His work continues to be recognized through collections that preserve his specific vision of the Dutch landscape and the quiet dignity of rural existence.
