A Shift Toward the Light
Born in the Detroit, Michigan area in 1949, Rose Ann Day spent her early years surrounded by the quiet, steady work of her parents. They were people who worked with their hands, whether they were designing, building, or tending to their gardens. This early exposure to the tactile nature of creation stayed with her. After earning a Bachelor’s Degree from Western Michigan University and a Master’s Degree from Oakland University, she spent a decade working as an educator. The decision to leave teaching behind was prompted by the harsh Michigan weather, which eventually led her and her family toward the warmth of the Southwest.
The change in climate brought a change in her creative life. In the Southwest, she found a different kind of light and a landscape that demanded a new way of seeing. She began studying at the Scottsdale Art League, focusing on the flowers and landscapes that defined her new surroundings. By 1981, she had been painting seriously for only a year when she decided to seek gallery representation. A single trip to Santa Fe changed everything; she walked into a gallery with four paintings, and by the time she returned home, every one of them had sold.
The Art of the Tangible
Her work is defined by a meticulous attention to detail, often utilizing a trompe-l'œil style that makes the subject matter feel physically present. She focuses on the textures of handmade objects, capturing the specific weight and surface of regional materials. Her paintings often feature:
- Indian artifacts and pottery
- Handmade basketry and rugs
- Regional flowers and Southwestern landscapes
- Textured, everyday objects
Through careful, attentive brushwork, she attempts to convey a sense of appreciation for the items she paints. She often incorporates pieces and places she loves directly into her compositions, turning a still life into a study of history and craft. Her paintings have been included in the book Fresh Flowers: The Best of Flower Painting and have been reproduced on greeting cards to benefit the Arthritis Foundation of Southern Arizona.
