A Life of Precision and Purpose
Born at Fulshaw Hall in Wilmslow, Cheshire, on 13 February 1719, Samuel Finney was the eldest son of Samuel Finney II and Esther. His early years were shaped by the financial pressures facing his family, a circumstance that initially steered him toward the study of law in London. Yet, the rigid structures of legal training could not hold him. He abandoned the profession to pursue painting, a decision that would ultimately define his place in the eighteenth century.
Finney proved to be a man of significant technical skill, mastering the delicate and difficult medium of enamel painting on metal alongside the more traditional use of watercolour on ivory. His success was not merely a matter of talent but of a disciplined command over these miniature formats. By 1761, he was exhibiting his work at the Exhibition of the Society of Artists, establishing a presence in the competitive London art scene.
Royal Patronage and Social Standing
The height of Finney's professional recognition arrived in 1765. Following the exhibition of a miniature portrait of Queen Charlotte, he received the prestigious appointment of enamel and miniature painter to Her Majesty. This connection to the court provided a level of stability and prestige that allowed him to amass a fortune. This wealth was not merely for personal comfort; he used it to settle the debts and encumbrances on his family's old estate.
His professional life was marked by formal recognition within the artistic community. He was a member of the Incorporated Society of Artists and, in 1766, subscribed the declaration roll of that same society. His work was characterized by a meticulous approach to the small scale, often working on surfaces where the grain of the ivory was visible beneath the pigment.
The Quiet Years at Fulshaw
In 1769, having secured his family's financial standing, Finney retired to Fulshaw. He transitioned from the delicate precision of the miniature painter to the civic responsibilities of a Justice of the Peace. His later years were spent in Cheshire, where he focused on local improvements and the quelling of regional riots. He also turned his attention to his own lineage, compiling a manuscript history of his family, a portion of which was eventually printed in the first volume of the Cheshire and Lancashire Historical Collector.
Finney died in 1798 and was buried in Wilmslow. He left no children, having been married twice. While his career was defined by the tiny, detailed worlds he created on ivory and enamel, his final years were dedicated to the tangible realities of his home county.
