      The leftovers of a life

Born in Israel in 1967, Tal R moved to Denmark with his family when he was only one year old. This early shift between landscapes shaped a perspective that eventually found its way into the studios of Copenhagen. He spent his formative years studying at Billedskolen in Copenhagen from 1986 to 1988, later refining his practice at the Royal Danish Academy of Fine Arts between 1994 and 2000. His work carries a specific weight, a sense of being assembled from what remains. He uses the term kolbojnik to describe this approach, a Hebrew word for "left-overs" or a "jack-of-all-trades." It is a way of working that avoids the singular focus of a specialist, opting instead for a messy, gathered accumulation of forms.

His palette is not one of endless variety, but of a deliberate, limited selection. He often works with seven specific colors: murky black, white, mustard yellow, pillar box red, forest green, chocolate brown, and bubblegum pink. These are not the bright, pure colors of a traditionalist, but shades that feel lived-in and perhaps a bit worn. By restricting himself to these buckets of paint, he keeps the focus on the shape and the content of the image rather than the technicality of the hue. There is a certain tension in how these colors sit on the canvas, sometimes creating a border that looks like embroidery or the margins of an old manuscript.

A sense of place and absence

The work often feels like a memory of a place that never quite existed, or perhaps a place seen through a distorted lens. In his exhibition this is not Detroit, he used large-scale paintings in a moody palette of blues to imagine the neighborhoods of a city he has never actually visited. He used primitive shapes and energetic brushstrokes to build these insular worlds, turning waves, ships, and buildings into something that feels more like a dream than a map. This method of investigating iconography from a distance—working from a studio in Denmark to understand the visual language of America—creates a sense of displacement. It is a way of looking at the world through the fog of imagination.

There is a recurring interest in the space around the subject, a concept he has referred to as "minus." This is the empty space, the area that allows a viewer to enter the work. It is a quiet, open area that sits alongside the more crowded, active parts of the canvas. In works like Stairs Afrique, he takes a recognizable landmark like the Spanish Steps in Rome and replaces the expected architecture with a looming, black presence. He moves between the heavy and the fragile, the dark and the optimistic, often disrupting the clean lines of minimalism with a sense of childlike abandon or the textures of craft.

The physical reality of the work

The art is not merely a visual experience; it is a physical one that can be subject to the whims of others. In 2019, a legal dispute arose when two artists attempted to cut up one of his paintings, titled Paris Chic, to use the canvas for luxury watch faces. The Maritime and Commercial Court of Denmark eventually stepped in to stop the destruction of the work, a moment that highlighted the tangible, material value of the canvas itself. This event underscores that for Tal R, the painting is a singular object that cannot be easily dismantled without losing its essence.

His influence extends into the classroom, as he currently teaches at the Kunstakademie Düsseldorf. His practice remains rooted in the idea of the artist as a maker of many things, someone who uses photography as a fiction to be overcome and who finds meaning in the way a camera captures the in-between places of life. His exhibitions have traveled from Chicago to Dublin, London, and Helsinki, carrying this specific, assembled language of shapes and colors across borders.
