A Life in Paris and Military Service
Born in Paris, Théophile Poilpot was the son of a famous painter. He received his artistic training at the École des Beaux-Arts, studying under Gustave Boulanger and Jean-Léon Gérôme. Beyond the studio, his life was marked by military service; he served as a Sergeant of the First Volunteer Regiment of the Seine during the Franco-Prussian War and later retired as an officer of the reserves. His civic involvement included serving as the Mayor of Noisy-le-Grand from 1887 to 1892, as well as roles as an Alderman and a Cantonal Delegate.
A noted military painter, Poilpot was honored with the Military Medal and was appointed a Commandeur of the Legion of Honour in 1913. He was also a Chevalier of the Order of St. Anna of Russia. His professional affiliations included the Society of French Artists and the Military Circle of the Friends of the Louvre.
Artistic Legacy and Major Works
Poilpot was a specialist in panorama painting and history painting, creating works that reached far beyond France. His large-scale panoramas were exhibited at the Universal Expositions of 1889 and 1900. His notable works include:
