A Life in Portraits
Wilhelm Trautschold began his life in Berlin, born on June 2, 1815. His hands learned the craft through formal training at the Berlin Akademie der Kunste and later at the Kunstakademie Düsseldorf between 1833 and 1836. During those years in Düsseldorf, he sat at the feet of Karl Ferdinand Sohn and Wilhelm Schadow. These early lessons shaped a steady hand capable of capturing the quiet dignity of his subjects.
His path took him through many cities, from the laboratories of Giessen to the streets of Rome and Florence. In 1843, he held a position as a drawing instructor at the University of Giessen. By 1860, he had moved to London, living in Fitzroy Square. He moved between Germany, Italy, and England, often settling where his commissions required him to be. His later years brought him to Munich, where he died on January 7, 1877.
The Faces of an Era
Trautschold focused much of his energy on the people who defined the intellectual landscape of the mid-19th century. He had a particular affinity for academics, scientists, and clergy. His brush worked to record the presence of professional figures, often capturing them in moments of stillness. One notable subject was the chemist Justus von Liebig; a portrait of this man was so recognizable that it later appeared on a German 100 Reichsmark banknote in 1935.
While portraits were his primary focus, he did not limit himself to faces alone. His work included:
- Genre scenes that captured everyday life.
- Animal paintings and studies.
- Landscapes, such as his piece titled ‘A Scene in the Black Forest’.
- Lithographs and stipple engravings.
Artistic Reach and Legacy
The reach of his work extended into many public collections across Europe. His oil paintings and prints can be found in the National Portrait Gallery in London, the Royal Society of Chemistry, and the V&A Museum. He also left traces of his work in the Liebig Museum in Giessen. His ability to move between different mediums, from oil on canvas to lithography, allowed his images to circulate through both private collections and wider print culture.
His family was also connected to the world of science and art. His brother, Hermann Trautschold, worked as a paleontologist. His son, Manfred Trautschold, followed a similar path into painting and lithography. Through these connections, the name Trautschold remained linked to the academic and artistic circles of the 19th century.
