A Life in the German Community of Tallinn
Waldemar Ivanovitch Hau grew up within the German-speaking circles of Reval, a city then part of the Russian Empire. His father, Johannes Hau, had moved from Northern Germany to this region in 1795, establishing a lineage of craft and sight. The young painter began his training under the watchful eye of Karl von Kügelgen, a man who had already served as a court painter. This early connection to the imperial circles would later define much of his professional path.
By the age of sixteen, Hau was already receiving opportunities to paint grand duchesses. This early recognition led him toward the Imperial Academy of Arts, where he spent time as a guest student between 1833 and 1835. His education was not confined to the classroom in Russia; he traveled through Germany and Italy for two years, absorbing the light and landscapes of the continent before returning to the service of the Russian court.
The Precision of the Biedermeier Style
His work often focused on the intimate details of portraiture. Working primarily in watercolor and miniatures on ivory, Hau captured the faces of the nobility and the imperial family with a naturalness that avoided unnecessary flourish. His hand was steady, capable of rendering the fine textures of clothing and the quiet expressions of his subjects. This approach sat firmly within the Biedermeier style, which favored domesticity and realistic detail over grand, sweeping narratives.
The breadth of his subject matter included:
- Members of the Russian imperial family, including portraits of Emperor Nicholas I and Tsarina Alexandra Fyodorovna.
- The children of the Duke of Leuchtenberg and the Duke Peter of Oldenburg.
- Prominent figures such as Natalia Pushkina and various counts and princes of the Russian and Baltic German societies.
- A collection of 200 miniature portraits created for the veterans of the Izmaylovsky Regiment.
Court Appointments and Later Years
In 1840, Hau was appointed court painter, a position he held for three decades. This long tenure allowed him to document the changing faces of the Russian aristocracy during the reign of Tsar Nicholas I. His technical skill earned him several honors, including a big silver medal in 1836 and election as an academician of portrait painting in 1849. He moved through the high circles of Saint Petersburg, leaving behind a record of the era's most influential people.
His career was marked by a consistent dedication to the individual likeness. Whether working on large-scale portraits or small, delicate miniatures, he maintained a focus on the person before him. He lived until 1895, passing away in Saint Petersburg, leaving his works to be held in collections such as the State Hermitage, the State Tretyakov Gallery, and the State Russian Museum.
