A Life of Scholarship and Service
Xie Jin lived during the early years of the Ming dynasty, born in 1369 in Jishui zhou, Ji'an lu. He came from a family where government service was a long-standing tradition, with his father, Xie Kai, being part of the educated gentry. From a young age, he showed a deep aptitude for Confucian studies. By 1387, he had passed the provincial civil service examination, and only one year later, he achieved the rank of jinshi through the palace examination.
His early career in the central administration was marked by both rapid ascent and sudden setbacks. While his extensive knowledge caught the attention of the Hongwu Emperor, his own confidence sometimes led to friction with his superiors. This tension resulted in him being sent back to his hometown for a period of ten years. However, the transition to the reign of the Yongle Emperor brought a significant change. Xie Jin is believed to have authored the proclamation announcing this new emperor's accession, an act that helped him regain favor and eventually rise to the position of Grand Secretary.
The Weight of Office
As a high-ranking official, Xie Jin held several influential roles, including Chancellor of the Hanlin Academy and Head of the Imperial University. He was deeply involved in the cultural and administrative life of the era, participating in the compilation of the Yongle Encyclopedia and helping to revise the Veritable Records of Emperor Taizu. His work was not merely political; it was rooted in the preservation of history and genealogy.
The stability of his position ended due to the political animosity of Zhu Gaoxu, the emperor's younger son. In 1411, Xie Jin was removed from office and arrested. He spent several years in prison before he was killed by the Embroidered Uniform Guard in 1415. Though his life ended in tragedy, his family eventually saw a restoration of their status and property under later emperors.
Artistry in Ink and Script
Beyond his political duties, Xie Jin was a man of letters, recognized for his skills as a painter, calligrapher, and poet. He was a leading figure in what was known as cabinet style poetry, characterized by a classic yet fresh literary style. His calligraphy was admired for its precision and perfection, often appearing on works such as his ink on satin pieces that recorded the poems of others.
His visual contributions included works like Traveling Early in Clouds and Sun, an ink on paper hanging scroll held at the Shanghai Museum. His artistic output reflected the same scholarly depth found in his official writings, blending his expertise in history and calligraphy with a delicate hand. Even in his written records, his presence is felt through the seals he used, such as xie jin zhi yin.
