Born in Vienna, Austria, his early life was shaped by the estates of his father, a merchant and landowner, and later by the familial influence of his cousin Ferdinand von Saar. While he initially pursued a military career, the call of the canvas proved irresistible. By 1834, Petten andkofen had transitioned from soldier to student, enrolling at the Academy of Fine Arts to study under masters such as Leopold Kupelwieser and Franz Eybl. His early works reflected the Biedermeier style, characterized by a focus on domesticity and gentle genre scenes, yet a deeper, more atmospheric sensibility was already beginning to stir within his technique.
The turbulent years of the Revolutions of 1848 marked a pivotal shift in his artistic trajectory.
