Stampa, Switzerland, 1877. The air in the Val Bregaglia is sharp, and for Antonio Augusto Giacometti, the world begins with the heavy weight of lineage. He is a second cousin to Giovanni Giacometti, part of an extended family tree that would eventually produce Alberto and Diego. His early years are shaped by the schools of Stampa, Zurich, and Chur, but his eyes soon drift toward the light of Paris.
In Paris, between 1897 and 1901, the atmosphere shifts. Under the guidance of Eugène Grasset at the School of Decorative Arts, Giacometti learns the language of floral graphics. He adopts a style reminiscent of William Morris, applying manual skill to mosaics, clocks, and posters. The decorative becomes his foundation. He moves through Florence, absorbing the influence of Renaissance masters like Beato Angelico, before settling in Zurich in 1915.
The transition is not sudden. It is a slow shedding of ornament. What begins as Art Nouveau decoration gradually strips away its edges, leaving behind only the essence of hue. He moves from the structured lines of graphic design toward separated, intense fields of color. By the time he reaches his maturity, the subject matter—be it a landscape or a flower—recedes to make room for the medium itself.
The artist finds a unique voice in the transparency of stained glass. This is not merely a secondary craft; it is a way to manipulate light directly. His work in the Grossmünster and Fraumünster in Zurich brings his experiments with color into the sacred space of the church. In 1935, he completes the window Entry of Jesus into Jerusalem for the San Giorgio Church in Borgonovo.
These commissions demand a specific technical rigor. He uses glass to handle light and color as pure elements. His ability to translate his color-field approach into architectural features marks a significant achievement in Swiss modernism. The windows are not just decorations; they are active participants in the atmosphere of the buildings.
His reach extends to murals and other media:
By the time he reaches his later years, Giacometti has become a pioneer of abstraction. He moves away from representational forms to focus on the fundamental rules of color. His work sits in major collections like the Museum of Modern Art in New York and Kunsthaus Zurich, reflecting a career that bridged the gap between Symbolism and early non-representational painting.
In 1933, he articulates his philosophy in a radio lecture titled Color and I. It is a moment of clarity for an artist who spent decades studying how pigments interact with the eye. Even as he engages with the Dadaists in Zurich or participates in groups like Das Neue Leben, his focus remains fixed on the saturation and character of the palette.
He dies in Zurich in 1947 from a heart attack. He leaves behind a body of work that traces a path from the intricate patterns of the decorative arts to the profound simplicity of color-field abstraction. His epitaph captures his essence: Qui riposa il maestro dei colori—Here lies the master of colour.
