Born in the historic streets of Bruges, Belgium, Charles Rousseau was destined to be shaped by the very stone and shadow of his birthplace. His lineage was one of craftsmanship; both his father and grandfather were sculptors and dealers of antiques, ensuring that the language of form and material was part of his earliest understanding. Though he initially sought to master the precision of architecture at the Academy of Fine Arts in Bruges, a change in direction was prompted by the guidance of Bruno van Hollebeke. This shift led him toward the brush and the canvas, a path that would eventually see him teaching at the Bruges academy for two decades.
His training extended beyond his home city to the academy in Brussels, where he studied under Jan Portaels. This education provided the foundation for a versatile career that spanned many genres. He moved with ease between the intimate details of portraiture and the grand narratives of history painting. His hands were equally capable of capturing the quiet stillness of a genre scene or the structural integrity of an architectural view.
Rousseau’s work often sought to preserve the essence of his surroundings, whether through the faces of his subjects or the light within a room. His talent was recognized through competition, notably when he sought the Godecharle prize with his 1887 work, "Samson and Delila." His ability to render light and space allowed him to move through various artistic modes:
In one notable work, "Het bezoek," he presents two women gathered by a Leuven stove. The scene, likely set within one of the traditional Bruges godshuizen, captures a moment of quiet companionship. The heavy cloak worn by the woman on the right adds a sense of weight and texture to the interior, grounding the viewer in a specific, lived reality.
The influence of his talent extended into the next generation, as his son Georges Rousseau also became a part of the Bruges School. Charles’s legacy remains held in private collections and within the walls of public institutions. The Groeningemuseum in Bruges maintains several of his paintings, including "Binnenzicht" and a large polyptych titled "Hulde aan de initiatiefnemers van de zeehaven van Brugge," which features twenty-six portraits. His hand also touched the sacred, as seen in the chronological list of the bishops of Bruges kept in the Heilig Bloedkapel. He passed away in Bruges, leaving behind a body of work that remains deeply tied to the identity of his city.
