John Olsen Hammerstad was born in Kristiansund, Norway, on April 19, 1842, the son of Ole Hammerstad and Magdalena Schei Hammerstad. Recognizing his innate talent for painting, Hammerstad embarked on an apprenticeship under a local painter and decorator, gaining invaluable practical experience alongside theoretical knowledge.
