Born in the vibrant coastal town of Jacmel, Haiti, Pauleus Vital did not begin his professional life with a brush in hand. His early years were defined by the tactile mastery of craftsmanship, as he learned the intricate skills of building boats and cabinets. At the age of twenty-one, Vital moved to Port-au-Prince to further his career in building, yet the seeds of a different creative calling were already beginning to take root.

It was not until he reached the age of thirty-eight that Vital transitioned from the world of carpentry and construction into the realm of fine art. This pivotal transformation was sparked by his half-brother, Prefete Duffaut, who introduced him to the renowned Centre d’Art. Immersed in this creative hub for three years, Vital began to translate his observations of the world into a visual language that blended the tangible with the mystical.

In 1959, Vital returned to his roots in Jacmel, where the natural beauty surrounding his home by the river became a primary source of inspiration.
