Early Years and Artistic Formation

Aguilar’s artistic journey began in Barcelona where he studied at the Escola Massana and the Conservatori de les Arts del Libro between 1962 and 1967. These formative years exposed him to influential movements like Surrealism and Minimalism, profoundly shaping his aesthetic sensibilities. Notably, a trip to Paris in 1965 ignited his fascination with Constantin Brancusi, Julio González, and the Russian constructivists—artists whose sculptural explorations championed experimentation and new ideas on space. This encounter cemented his commitment to challenging conventional sculptural paradigms.

Sculptural Exploration and Influences

From 1972 he dedicated himself exclusively to sculpture and in 1974 he had his first solo show at Galería Adrià in Barcelona. He belongs to a generation of Spanish artists born following the Civil War who would be responsible for initiating the break from previous conceptions of sculpture and ushering in the experimentation and new ideas on space which were taking place in Europe and the United States. His work reflects an ecological awareness, integrating sound into his artistic process—a deliberate effort to engage with the relationship between form, space, and sonic vibrations. Influenced by figures like Brancusi and González, Aguilar’s sculptures often confront viewers with questions about perception and materiality.

Notable Exhibitions and Recognition

Aguilar's sculptures have been exhibited in numerous institutions, including MACBA Museum of Contemporary Art of Barcelona and the Colección BBVA. He has also been featured in the collection of abanca art collection. His innovative approach to sculpture garnered recognition with awards like the National Prize for Sculpture in Spain in 1986. Furthermore, his work has been subject to several books and catalogs showcasing the breadth and depth of his artistic production.

Contemporary Artistic Practice and Legacy

Throughout his longstanding practice he has experimented with different materials and disciplines, like photography, audiovisuals or works for the public space, and he is currently director of Fundació Suñol, a foundation based in Barcelona, specialized in contemporary art. His sculptures are characterized by their abstract and minimalist style, often featuring geometric shapes and simple lines. Aguilar’s use of materials such as acrylic and steel adds a contemporary touch to his sculptures, making them stand out in any space.
