Beskrivelse af samlerobjektet

Starting Out (1957) was Zhan Jianjun’s graduation work for Konstantin Maksimov’s oil painting course. The work depicts young people who have just arrived in the Great Northern Wasteland in northeastern China to prepare wilderness for cultivation. They did not flinch in the face of the adverse natural environment and harsh living conditions in the Great Northern Wasteland.Zhan Jianjun was deeply moved by the enterprising spirit of these wasteland cultivation teams, so he went to the Beijing Youth Wasteland Reclamation Base. He worked, ate, and lived with them, searching for source material for his work. These young people believed they were making history by laboring to develop this wasteland, thereby reflecting their youthful heroism and romanticism. After the painting was completed, it was shown at the “World Youth Gathering” International Art Exhibition, where it won the bronze medal. This was the first Chinese oil painting to win an international award after the founding of the People’s Republic.

George Condo: Architect of the Unconscious

Born in Concord, New Hampshire, in 1957, George Condo’s artistic journey is a fascinating exploration of the subconscious mind rendered in vibrant, unsettling, and ultimately captivating paintings. His early life, marked by a dual pursuit of music – guitar and composition – alongside art history studies at the University of Massachusetts Lowell, laid the groundwork for his unique visual language. This confluence of disciplines—the structured logic of musical theory juxtaposed with the expressive freedom of artistic creation—became a defining characteristic of his work. Moving to Boston in the late 1970s, Condo found himself immersed in the burgeoning punk and blues scene, forming bands like The Girls and Hi Sheriffs of Blue, experiences that further fueled his creative experimentation.

A pivotal moment arrived in 1979 with a chance encounter at New York City’s Tier 3 nightclub with Jean-Michel Basquiat. This meeting proved transformative, propelling Condo towards the heart of the East Village art scene and ultimately to a career dedicated to visual expression. He quickly established himself as part of a group of artists—including Keith Haring and Mark Dagley—who were pushing boundaries and challenging conventional notions of representation. Condo’s early work was characterized by a deliberate rejection of traditional realism, embracing instead what he termed “Artificial Realism”—a concept that sought to capture the essence of something through its artificial or constructed form. This approach involved layering recognizable imagery with distorted perspectives, fragmented forms, and an unsettling sense of unease, reflecting the complexities and contradictions inherent in human experience.

The Development of Artificial Realism

Condo’s artistic philosophy evolved significantly throughout his career, but “Artificial Realism” remained a cornerstone. He wasn't simply creating abstract images; he was attempting to depict the *feeling* of reality—the way it appears when filtered through the subconscious. His paintings are populated by figures that seem simultaneously familiar and alien, often rendered in a manner reminiscent of Old Master techniques yet imbued with a distinctly modern sensibility. Influences range from European masters like Picasso and Velázquez to American Pop Art icons such as Andy Warhol, but Condo’s work transcends simple imitation. He masterfully blends these influences into a wholly original style characterized by exaggerated proportions, jarring color palettes, and a deliberate disruption of spatial relationships.

A key element in understanding Condo's technique is his use of layering—multiple images are often superimposed upon one another, creating a sense of depth and complexity. He frequently employs techniques borrowed from silkscreen printing and collage, adding texture and visual interest to his canvases. His work isn’t about precise representation; it’s about conveying an emotional state or psychological landscape. The figures in his paintings aren't portraits in the traditional sense but rather embodiments of internal states—anxiety, joy, confusion, and a profound awareness of mortality.

Collaborations and Recognition

Condo’s artistic journey has been punctuated by significant collaborations that have further shaped his creative vision. His association with William S. Burroughs proved particularly fruitful, resulting in a series of paintings and etchings titled *Ghost of Chance*, which explored themes of identity, paranoia, and the nature of reality. These works, published by the Whitney Museum in 1991, demonstrated Condo’s ability to synthesize his artistic practice with literary concepts. He also worked closely with Keith Haring, contributing to Haring's iconic style while maintaining his own distinct voice.

Throughout the 1980s and 1990s, Condo gained increasing recognition within the art world, exhibiting in galleries across New York, Europe, and beyond. His work has been featured in major exhibitions at institutions such as the Contemporary Arts Museum Houston, the Solomon R. Guggenheim Museum, and the Musée Maillol. His influence extends to contemporary artists who continue to explore themes of identity, perception, and the subconscious—a testament to his enduring legacy.

Legacy and Current Work

George Condo’s impact on contemporary art is undeniable. His pioneering approach to painting—combining technical skill with a deeply personal vision—has inspired generations of artists to embrace experimentation and challenge conventional artistic boundaries. His work continues to be exhibited internationally, and his paintings are highly sought after by collectors worldwide. Today, Condo remains an active artist based in New York City, continuing to push the limits of his unique visual language and exploring the ever-shifting landscapes of the human psyche.
