A Painter to the Scottish Court
Adrian Vanson was a portrait artist who worked for James VI of Scotland. Born in Breda, Netherlands, he was likely the son of Willem Claesswen van Son and Kathelijn Adriaen Matheus de Blauwverversdochter. His career in Scotland included serving as the "King's painter" from May 1584, a position he assumed after succeeding Arnold Bronckhorst. During his tenure, he received an annual fee of £100.
His documented works for the king include portraits of James VI and Anne of Denmark. He was also involved in painting heraldry on ceremonial items, such as banners for the king's trumpeters and the Danish royal arms for the coronation of Anne of Denmark. In 1594, he was identified in a royal privilege as the owner of a ship called The Sun.
