A Life in Salzburg
Born in Salzburg, Austria, Anton Steinhart was a versatile artist whose creative practice spanned painting, printmaking, graphic art, and photography. His formal training began at the private art school of the Salzburg landscape painter Franz Hinterholzer. Seeking to expand his artistic horizons, Steinhart traveled to England and Italy, and pursued studies in Munich and Paris. His life was marked by the turbulence of the First World War, during which he served from 1915 to 1918.
Steinhart maintained a professional connection to the renowned Photo Ellinger studio in Salzburg, working regularly as a photographer to support his livelihood. His artistic output was diverse, ranging from oil paintings of landscapes—many of which were produced during extended stays in Italy—to intricate reed pen drawings. These sketches and drawings captured the performances of the Salzburg Festival, a body of work he eventually published in a portfolio in 1960.
