The Hands of a Maker
Attila Duncsák was born in 1940 in Užhorod, Ukraine. He grew up in a family of tradesmen and masons, a background that grounded his early understanding of physical materials. While his father envisioned a path in decorative mural painting, Attila moved toward the more delicate complexities of glass and ceramics. He studied mural painting in Užhorod before traveling to Leningrad to attend the Applied Arts College, where he graduated in 1967. This training in the field of glass and ceramics shaped a tactile sensibility that would follow him throughout his life.
By 1982, he had settled in Košice, where he would remain for the rest of his life. His work was not confined to a single medium. He moved between the roles of painter, ceramicist, glass artist, and muralist, treating each material with a similar, quiet focus. His practice was marked by a steady, daily discipline, often beginning his work in the early morning hours and continuing well into the evening.
Forms and Myth
His creative output was deeply rooted in the stories of Greek mythology. He did not merely illustrate these tales; he sought to find a way to translate their weight and movement into his paintings and objects. His work often carried a sense of healing or spiritual resonance for those who viewed it. His technical range allowed him to explore different scales of expression:
- Mural paintings that occupied large, architectural spaces.
- Ceramic and glass works shaped by his studies in Leningrad.
- Paintings that explored themes of life, peace, and masquerade.
His exhibitions were held in various settings, from the MaJel Rovás Központ FiguratiF Galériája in Kassa to the Slovak National Museum. He was a member of the Zväz slovenských výtvarných umelcov, contributing to the visual landscape of the region through both his individual canvases and his involvement in collective exhibitions.
A Life in Košice
The later years of his life were spent in Košice, a city that became the backdrop for his continued evolution. Even as his health declined, his commitment to his craft remained. He viewed his work not as a pursuit of perfection, but as a continuous process of improvement. He lived through a period of significant change, remaining a constant presence in the Slovak, Hungarian, and Ukrainian artistic circles. He passed away in 2024, leaving behind a body of work that reflects a lifetime of working with clay, glass, and pigment.
