      The Parisian Canvas

Paris, 1790. The city breathes through the streets of the Petit-Bourbon-Saint-Sulpice, where Auguste-Jean-Simon Roux enters the world. He is the son of Simon Roux, a master jeweler and captain aide-major of the Cordeliers battalion, and Marie Geneviève Tournade. His life begins in the shadow of craftsmanship and military order. By 1817, he marries Anne Angélique Adèle Zoppi, establishing a domestic life in the heart of the city. His early years are defined by this proximity to the fine details of Parisian existence, a background that would later influence his transition from the brush to the jeweler's bench.

The year 1839 marks a shift. He steps into the public eye at the Salon, presenting Intérieur du Musée du Luxembourg. This moment signals his arrival as a painter capable of capturing the grand, structured spaces of French institutions. He does not merely paint scenes; he documents the intersection of architecture and social presence.

A Record of Light and Spectacle

Roux’s career moves through the mid-century with a focus on the interplay of light and civic life. He captures the atmosphere of a changing France, moving from the quietude of interiors to the grand illumination of the city itself. His work during this period reflects a keen eye for how light defines a space, whether through the glass of a window or the artificial glow of a public celebration.

His notable contributions to the visual record include:

The 1847 depiction of the Hôtel de Ville is a specific study of light. It captures the effect of the illumination during the King's Feast, a moment where the city's architecture is transformed by the glow of the festivities. This period of his life shows a painter deeply engaged with the visual spectacle of the Parisian streets.

      The Transition to Craft

The brush eventually yields to the precision of the jeweler. Later in life, Roux moves to the Place du Louvre, trading the expansive canvas for the intricate work of a jeweler. This shift is not a departure from his origins but a return to the specialized skill of his father. He lives this dual existence—the man who once painted the light of the Hôtel de Ville now working with the very materials that catch that light.

He remains in Paris until his final years. He dies in Saint-Mandé in 1876 at the age of 85. His remains are laid to rest in the Montparnasse Cemetery, leaving behind a body of work that captures the specific, flickering light of 19th-century Paris.
