The Munich School and the Light of the Amper

Bad Liebenzell provides the starting point for Bernhard Buttersack. His early years show a burgeoning talent that leads him toward the Royal Art School in Stuttgart. Under the guidance of Jakob Grünenwald and Albert Kappis, his technical foundation takes shape. The path moves from Stuttgart to Karlsruhe, where he becomes a master pupil of Hermann Baisch and Gustav Schönleber. This period of rigorous training prepares him for the intense atmosphere of Munich.

By 1884, Buttersack is working in Munich. The city's artistic energy defines his early professional years. His skill earns him recognition from the Prince Regent Luitpold, who appoints him a Royal Professor. In 1891, a gold medal at the Glaspalast marks a significant moment of achievement. He does not remain a solitary figure; in 1892, he becomes one of the founders of the Munich Secession, helping to shape the direction of German landscape painting.

      The Haimhausen Art Colony

A shift occurs toward the end of 1889. Buttersack moves to Dachau County, drawn by the dramatic landscapes that define the region. He eventually settles in Haimhausen, a location that becomes central to his legacy. Here, he constructs a large house featuring an expansive art studio and a landscaped garden. This space is more than a residence; it becomes the foundation for the Haimhausen Art Colony.

He opens a private art school, fostering a community of painters around his own practice. His work during this era focuses on the natural world, capturing the specific atmosphere of the German countryside. The landscapes are often heavy with movement and light, such as the tension found in Stormclouds over the Amper.

      Later Years and Retreat

The momentum of his teaching and painting eventually meets a period of personal decline. An unspecified nervous ailment begins to affect him. The connection to his surroundings weakens. He finds himself complaining about the frequent easterly winds, noting how they ruin the picturesque atmosphere he once sought to capture. The joy found in the local scenery diminishes.

In 1914, the transition to a reclusive life is complete. He moves to Icking. This period of isolation marks his final years before his death in 1925. His contribution remains tied to the Munich School and the development of landscape painting through his role as both a creator and an educator.
