A Life in Color and Faith

Born in Silkeborg, Denmark, Bodil Kaalund was the daughter of the painter Martin Kaalund-Jørgensen and Hilda Jenny Rasmussen. Her early interest in painting was nurtured by her father and her mother, who served as her teacher during summers in Røsnæs. After attending state school in Lyngby, she discovered the work of Edvard Munch while on holiday in Norway, a discovery that reinforced her burgeoning interest in religious art. At age 18, she exhibited two landscape paintings at Den Frie Udstilling's autumn exhibition. She later studied at the Royal Danish Academy of Fine Arts under Kræsten Iversen, Holger J. Jensen, and Elof Risebye, graduating in 1954.

Kaalund’s career was marked by a profound connection to both religious and cultural heritage. She became recognized for her painting Korsnedtagelsen (Descent from the Cross) in 1966. As one of the first female artists to decorate churches, she completed works for 27 churches, including Erlev Church, Lemvig Church, Solbjerg Church, and Strandmark Church. Her religious contributions also included illustrating the new authorized Danish edition of the Bible, which featured 159 illustrations based on scenes from the Limfjord and the west coast of Denmark.

      Cultural Legacy and Recognition

Beyond her ecclesiastical work, Kaalund was a significant figure in the recognition of Greenland's culture. Following a meeting with the Greenlandic artist Jens Rosing at the Royal Academy, she developed a deep interest in the region. Her efforts included arranging the first exhibition of Danish art in Greenland in 1968 and an exhibition of Greenlandic art in Denmark at the Louisiana Museum of Modern Art. She also collaborated to establish Grønlands Kunstskole and published Grønlands kunst, which was later translated as The Art of Greenland.

Throughout her life, Kaalund received several honors for her contributions, including:

She was also instrumental in establishing the Museet for Religiøs Kunst in 1994. Bodil Kaalund passed away in Lyngby in 2016.
