      The Formative Years in Flanders

Karel Rozalia De Roover enters the scene in Boom, Belgium, in 1900. The shadows of the First World War loom large over his early education. In the Netherlands, he learns the first strokes of a brush from his brother, Albert de Roover. This period of displacement and instruction sets the stage for a life defined by shifting perspectives.

The training moves to the Academy of Antwerp and later the NHISKA, where instructors like Isidore Opsomer and Albert Ciamberlani shape his technical foundation. By 1921, the recognition begins with the Nicaise De Keyser prize, followed by the Van Lerius prize in 1922. The year 1928 brings the prestigious Prix de Rome, marking a peak in his early academic standing.

      A Century of Shifting Styles

The canvas undergoes radical transformations as the decades pass. In the early years, the work focuses on stylized rural figures and nudes. Then, a shift occurs. Between 1920 and 1924, Cubism exerts its influence, pulling his compositions into new geometric tensions. By 1924, he moves toward Constructivism, embracing a more structured design language.

The 1930s bring light. He turns his attention to sun-drenched landscapes, capturing the warmth of the Belgian countryside. As the Second World War arrives, the mood darkens and deepens. His work adopts a verist spirit, producing poetic still lifes that blend photographic realism with an almost hallucinatory quality. The objects on his table become intensely expressive.

The later years see further departures from tradition:

      • Around 1965, he moves toward geometric abstraction.
      • In the mid-sixties, he experiments with textures, painting the surfaces of weathered wood and roller shutters.
      • After 1975, his focus shifts to interiors rendered through a hyperrealistic lens.

      Legacy in Antwerp

The classroom becomes a second home. From 1929 until 1966, De Roover teaches at the Academy of Antwerp, passing on the technical rigor he once received. His presence in the Belgian art scene is cemented through various retrospectives, including shows at the Palais des Beaux-Arts in Brussels and the Museum Sint-Niklaas.

His career concludes in Antwerp, where he passed away in 1986. He leaves behind a body of work that refused to remain static, moving from the figurative traditions of his youth to the stark precision of hyperrealism.
