      A Life Formed by Fragments

Born in Jihlava in 1922, Čestmír Kafka lived through a century defined by profound shifts and sudden ruptures. His early years were shaped by the landscape of the Bohemian-Moravian Highlands and the quiet routine of his grandfather’s bakery. These early memories would later find their way into the textures of his work. His formal training began at the Baťa School of Art in Zlín, where he studied applied and decorative painting under Vladimír Hroch. This period of education was not a smooth progression; the shadows of war intervened, and between 1942 and 1943, Kafka endured forced labour in Styria.

After the war, he moved to Prague to study at the Academy of Arts, Architecture and Design. Under the guidance of Professor Emil Filla, his artistic language began to expand. The lessons of Cubism introduced a structured, rational way of seeing that merged with his existing surrealist inclinations. He became a founding member of the Route 45 group, an association of artists who sought to reconnect Czech art with broader European traditions, moving away from the heavy-handedness of socialist realism toward a more personal, modern aesthetic.

      The Texture of Existence

Kafka’s practice was never confined to a single method. He moved through various modes of expression, often using materials that felt as much like physical remnants as they did artistic tools. In the 1960s, he turned toward material painting, layering oil with plaster, sand, clay, and even glass. These surfaces were frequently scratched or dug into, creating a sense of depth that was both tactile and psychological. His work often explored the intersection of different creative realms, drawing inspiration from literature, poetry, and theatre.

As his career progressed, his focus shifted toward more minimalist and abstract forms. In the late 1970s, he developed the Connecting Two Things cycle, a series of assemblages that used scraps of paper, cloth, and found objects held together by clips or threads. This technique of joining fragments served as a quiet reflection on the fragmentation of the human soul and the political tensions of the era. His later works, influenced by his experiences in Japan and the stillness of Zen gardens, moved toward an even more stripped-back approach. In his final years, he created the Substances series, placing organic elements like roots, leaves, and ash within glass cases, capturing a sense of quiet, elemental presence.

      A Quiet Presence in History

Though political restrictions often limited his ability to exhibit publicly during the 1950s, Kafka’s influence was felt through his graphic work and his participation in essential art groups. His output remained diverse, ranging from early surrealist drawings that resembled diary entries to highly structured geometric abstractions. He possessed a rare ability to balance a rationalist, constructive approach with a sensitive, poetic reflection on the world around him.

His legacy is held within significant institutions, including:

      • National Gallery, Prague
      • Centre Georges Pompidou, Paris
      • Art Institute of Chicago
      • Museum Bochum, Bochum
      • Muzeum Sztuki Lodz, Lodz
