The Early Years

Ch'Ien Kung came into the world in Changshu, China, in 1582. His early life was marked by loss, as he was orphaned at a young age. Under this guidance, the brushwork began to take shape. He learned the discipline required for the Suzhou School style, focusing on the quiet precision of ink and paper. A Study of Tradition

His work often looked back to older compositions, finding meaning in the reinterpretation of established scenes. One such piece, Gathering at the Orchid Pavilion, draws from a much older tradition. This specific painting follows a composition originally attributed to Li Gonglin.

In this work, the scene captures a moment of literary gathering by a stream. The details are small and specific:

Ch'Ien Kung lived until 1664, leaving behind a body of work that belongs to the Suzhou School. His life ended in the same era that saw the transition of many Chinese artistic traditions.
