      Early Life and Artistic Training

Born in the town of Pößneck on 16 February 1860, Clara Walther possessed a natural inclination toward the visual arts that manifested quite early. By the age of sixteen, she was already demonstrating a remarkable talent that suggested a life dedicated to the brush and the engraver's tool. This early promise led her away from her birthplace to seek the formal instruction necessary to refine her innate abilities.

Her path as a painter and engraver took her through several significant centers of learning. She first sought to develop her skills in Dresden, where she began her formal studies in painting. From there, her education moved to Weimar, where between 1874 and 1880, she studied under Zdzisław Suchodolski. This period of training helped shape her technical foundation before she moved toward the artistic circles of Munich. In 1883, she entered the studio of Ludwig von Löfftz, a move that would define much of her professional development and her eventual residence in the city.

      Professional Career and Munich Years

By the year 1888, Walther had begun to make her presence known within the artistic circles of Munich, securing a place to exhibit her works at the Münchner Glaspalast. This period marked a significant chapter in her life as she transitioned from a student of the masters to a professional presence in the city. She eventually made Munich her permanent residence in 1902, a move that anchored her career in one of the most active centers for German art. Her life there was defined by a steady, industrious output that reflected a deep engagement with both the physical world and the technical demands of her craft.

Her hand was versatile, moving with ease between the delicate precision of an engraver and the broader strokes required for oil painting. She did not limit herself to a single subject, instead choosing to explore the quietude of interiors and the structured beauty of still lifes. Her landscapes captured the light of the natural world, while her portraits sought to hold the likeness of her subjects with a steady gaze. This breadth of interest allowed her to navigate various commissions and personal explorations with a singular, focused intent.

      Notable Works and Artistic Output

The breadth of Walther's creative output reveals a hand capable of moving between the quiet intimacy of a domestic interior and the expansive scale of the natural world. In her larger compositions, such as the oil on canvas titled The Sewer and the Angel, which measures 105 x 131,5 cm, she demonstrated a command over significant physical space. Her interest in the landscape was equally profound, as seen in her 1910 work Sächsische Schweiz - Am Basteifelsen, where she sought to capture the specific character of the Saxon Switzerland region. This ability to observe the world led her to explore the delicate arrangements of nature through various still lifes, including Blumenstillleben, Stillleben mit Obst, and the simple presence of Eine Sonnenblume.

Beyond the landscape and the arrangement of objects, she turned her gaze toward the human form, seeking to capture the essence of her subjects through portraiture. In 1919, she painted a portrait of a young girl, a work that required a sensitive touch to render the youth of her sitter. This interest in the human presence continued into the following year, when she completed a portrait of a seated woman in 1920. Through these varied subjects, from the structured stillness of fruit to the fleeting expressions of a young girl, her work reflects a life spent observing the subtle textures and light of the world around her.
