A Life Between Venice and St Petersburg

Born in Venice on July 28, 1808, Cosroe Dusi grew up in a city where the shadows of great masters still lingered in every canal and courtyard. His formal training began early, as he entered the Academy of Fine Arts of Venice in 1820. Under the guidance of Teodoro Matteini, Dusi learned the discipline required to handle both sacred and historical subjects. He studied alongside peers like Michelangelo Grigoletti, developing a hand that could move with both precision and speed. This quickness of execution earned him a nickname among those who watched him work: the modern Tintoretto.

His path was not confined to the borders of Italy. Dusi’s career took him through Munich and eventually to Russia, where he spent many years in St Petersburg. In this northern capital, his work found new scale and purpose. He contributed to the spiritual landscape of the city, painting significant works for St Isaac's Cathedral, including depictions of the Last Supper and the Deposition. His ability to adapt to different cultural needs allowed him to move between the intimate portraits of a German studio and the monumental religious commissions of the Russian Empire.

The Language of Neoclassicism and Romanticism

Dusi’s artistic identity was shaped by a complex dialogue between several movements. While his foundation was rooted in the Neoclassical style, his later works absorbed the emotional weight of Romanticism and the narrative depth of Historicism. He possessed a particular interest in medieval history, often using it to ground his compositions in a sense of gravity. His landscapes, though fewer in number, reflected a quiet connection to the natural world, often appearing as spiritualized versions of the environments he encountered.

His technical repertoire was broad, extending far beyond the oil on canvas. He worked with lithography, engraving, and watercolor, even applying encaustic decoration to surfaces. This versatility is evident in his various outputs:

      • Lithographic series depicting the daily trades of Venice, such as fishmongers and chimney sweeps.
      • Large-scale historical canvases like The Death of Alcibiades.
      • Religious altarpieces for churches in Tyrol, including works for the parish church of St Michael at Brixen.
      • Decorative elements for theaters, such as the main drop-curtain for Teatro La Fenice.

      A Rediscovered Connection to Verona

One of the most moving chapters of Dusi's legacy involves a painting that was once thought lost to time. His 1838 work, Juliet and Romeo, depicts the nocturnal encounter between the two lovers in the house of the Capulets. For nearly two centuries, this large canvas remained hidden from public view, eventually resurfacing to find its place again at Juliet’s House in Verona. The painting captures a tender moment, showing the pair richly dressed and looking upon one another with sorrow.

This work arrived at a time when Dusi was refining his style under the influence of Francesco Hayez. It remains a significant piece of his history, representing the intersection of Shakespearean drama and 19th-century Italian painting. Through his various roles as an illustrator, painter, and lithographer, Dusi left behind a body of work that spans from the private sketches of nature to the grand altars of Europe's most important cathedrals.
