      The Materiality of Change

David Altmejd began his formal studies in Montreal, earning a Bachelor of Fine Arts from the Université du Québec à Montréal before moving to New York to complete a Masters of Fine Arts at Columbia University in 2001. His early work reflected the clean lines of Minimalism and geometric abstraction, yet his practice soon drifted toward much denser, more crowded forms. He moved away from simple shapes to explore how objects might grow or decay. Today, he works primarily in Los Angeles, creating sculptures that occupy the space between the human body and something far less recognizable.

The surfaces of his sculptures hold a heavy accumulation of detail. He uses materials that suggest both the organic and the synthetic: hair, mirrors, glass, quartz, resin, and even taxidermy birds or animals. In pieces like Spirit, he uses 3D printing and technology to reshape the classic bust into a crystallized form that sits between life and death. There is a specific tension in how he places polished stone next to rough textures, or gold chains alongside plasticine hands. These choices create a sense of metamorphosis, as if the sculptures are caught in a middle state of becoming something else.

      Form and Fragmentation

The work often centers on the human figure, but it is rarely a simple representation. Instead, he uses the body as a starting point to explore much larger, more complex systems. His sculptures frequently feature large-scale figures, such as his well-known werewolf heads, which appear to be spliced with crystals and jewels. These works do not rely on standard stories; they rely on the way materials like bondage gear, faux jewelry, and minerals interact within a single structure. He treats the interior and exterior of an object as permeable boundaries, pushing holes through forms to let matter move through space.

His process involves a mix of traditional methods and modern tools. He has used CNC milling machines to carve intricate patterns into metal or stone, yet he also relies on bricolage—the assembly of disparate, found objects. This combination allows him to build large-scale installations that function like stage sets for fantastical, shifting scenarios. The scale varies from intimate busts to room-sized installations, but the level of detail remains constant across every surface.

      Recognition and Presence

Altmejd's presence in the contemporary art landscape is marked by his inclusion in significant international exhibitions. He represented Canada at the 2007 Venice Biennale and was part of the 2004 Whitney Biennial. His work has been held in several permanent collections, including:

Through his work, he continues to examine the boundaries between the beautiful and the grotesque, using the physical weight of his materials to address themes of spirituality, decay, and the limits of human perception.
