      The Wandering Painter of Bergen

Amsterdam, 1885. The air in the city carries the scent of the family café, a business held by the Filarski family for generations. Young Dirk Herman Willem Filarski grows up amidst this commerce before turning toward the Quellinus School of Applied Arts. He moves through the halls of the Rijksschool voor Kunstnijverheid, situated within the very building of the Rijksmuseum, refining a gaze that favors the natural world. By 1907, his path pulls him away from the urban center toward Bergen.

The landscape of Bergen aan Zee becomes a gravitational force. Here, an art colony begins to coalesce. Filarski finds himself working alongside figures like Leo Gestel and Else Berg. He is not a stationary figure; he is a wanderer. His palette shifts with his movements across the map. In some years, he embraces the bright, light-filled strokes of Luminism. In others, he experiments with the raw energy of Expressionism. He retreats into more somber tones before returning once more to the pursuit of detail and color.

A Map of Light and Color

His travels define his subject matter. The canvas records his passage through Switzerland, Italy, France, Norway, and the Netherlands. One moment, he is capturing a view of Pont Neuf in Paris; the next, he is documenting a southern French village near Menton. His work oscillates between the expansive and the intimate.

The artist finds profound meaning in the small and the seasonal:

      • Still lifes featuring white lilies and rhododendrons.
      • The bright, floral presence of tulips in 1948.
      • The structural quiet of a farm in Bergen NH.
      • The movement of the Seine under the shadow of Notre-Dame.

He remains a member of the St Luke's Guild, maintaining his connection to the Dutch art community even as he seeks fresh inspiration in distant lands. His legacy exists in the quiet corners of Dutch museums and private collections, preserved through an oeuvre that refuses to settle into a single, unchanging style.
