      Early Life and Artistic Training

Edward Reep was born on May 10, 1918, in Brooklyn, New York. His trajectory shifted early when his family moved to Southern California in 1921. This relocation placed him in a landscape that would eventually host his formal development. By 1936, Reep had entered the Art Center School in Los Angeles to begin his professional training. It was a rigorous environment that demanded technical precision from its students.

His education was shaped by the direct influence of several specific instructors: Barse Miller, Willard Nash, Emil Bisttram, and Stanley Reckless. These mentors provided the foundation for a career defined by technical versatility. During his tenure at the Art Center School, Reep developed a particular interest in watercolor. This medium would remain a central component of his practice alongside oil and gouache.

      Service as a War Artist

Reep’s involvement in the conflict was not a matter of mere observation; it was a formal assignment. After volunteering for the Army in 1941, his talent was recognized by the War Department Art Advisory Committee. In May 1943, he was named one of forty-two official war artists. This designation placed him in the field as a war artist-correspondent from 1942 to 1946, a period that defined his technical approach to documenting reality under pressure.

His work during these years focused on the landscapes and human realities of Africa and Italy. He relied heavily on watercolors to capture the immediate conditions of the theater of war. These field sketches and paintings were not mere sketches; they were direct responses to the environments he inhabited. One of his most significant visual records from this era is Italian Shrine (1946), an oil on canvas that grew from the photographs, notes, and sketches he made in Bologna, Italy. The work captures a memorial created by citizens for those killed during the Nazi occupation, a scene Reep documented while serving in the region.

His commitment to historical documentation extended well beyond the immediate combat zones of the 1940s. Later, he accepted a commission from the Office of Military History to document the tenth anniversary of the Berlin Wall. This assignment required him to travel to West Germany for three weeks to produce the oil paintings and sketches that would eventually form the basis of his historical record of the site.

      Key Works and Artistic Achievements

Reep’s technical maturity is most clearly seen in Italian Shrine, a work he produced in 1946 while on a Guggenheim Fellowship. The painting, an oil on canvas, captures a memorial in Bologna, Italy, that had been established by local citizens to honor those killed during the Nazi occupation. Reep based the composition on sketches, notes, and photographs he gathered during his time as a combat artist. He personally identified this piece as one of his most significant achievements.

His influence extended into literature and formal recognition of his technical skill. In 1983, he published The Content of Watercolor, and later, in 1987, he released A Combat Artist in World War II. These writings provide a direct record of his experiences and his approach to his medium. His mastery of the watercolor medium was formally acknowledged in 1997 when he received the Distinguished Lifetime Achievement Gold Medal from the Watercolor USA Honor Society.

      Academic Career and Later Years

Reep’s influence extended into the classroom after he moved to Greenville, North Carolina, in 1970. He spent fifteen years at East Carolina University, serving as both Artist-in-Residence and Professor of Painting. This period was marked by a significant institutional recognition of his technical skill and professional standing. The Gray Art Gallery at the university eventually organized a retrospective of his work, acknowledging the depth of his contribution to the faculty.

His later years saw a return to the West Coast. Following his retirement in 1985, he moved back to California. He remained active in the art community, eventually settling in Bakersfield, California, where he lived until his death in 2013. His career was defined by this balance between rigorous academic instruction and a continued commitment to his personal practice across different regions of the United States.

Where to See His Works Today

The most significant presence of Reep’s output is found in Washington, D.C. The Smithsonian American Art Museum holds his 1946 oil on canvas, Italian Shrine. This specific work entered the museum's collection in 1984 as a gift from the artist himself. It remains a primary point of reference for his ability to translate wartime observations into formal compositions.

His legacy is also tied to the academic and regional institutions that supported his later career. The Gray Art Gallery at East Carolina University previously organized a retrospective exhibition to examine his body of work. This exhibition highlighted the breadth of his output beyond his early combat-related sketches. In California, Sullivan Goss in Santa Barbara maintains a selection of paintings by American artists, including works by Reep.
