A Life in Gold and Glass
Born in Linköping, Sweden, in 1892, Carl Einar Andreas Forseth was the son of a Norwegian lithographer. His early years were shaped by the movement of his family from Örebro to Gothenburg, where he began his formal training at the Arts and Crafts School. He later refined his skills at the Royal Swedish Academy of Arts in Stockholm between 1912 and 1915. These formative years provided him with a technical foundation that would eventually allow him to work across a vast array of media, from oil paintings and prints to ceramics and stained glass.
His artistic development was deeply influenced by his travels through Istanbul, Greece, and Italy. These excursions introduced him to the grandeur of Byzantine-inspired aesthetics and a fascination with monumental decoration. This period of exploration expanded his reach beyond the canvas, leading him toward the creation of large-scale works such as frescos, tapestries, and mosaics that could inhabit significant architectural spaces.
The Golden Hall and Decorative Mastery
The most significant chapter of his career arrived between 1921 and 1923, when he was tasked with decorating the Golden Hall in Stockholm City Hall. Working alongside architect Ragnar Östberg, Forseth utilized 18.6 million pieces of glass and gold to create a space of immense detail. The central figure of this work, the Mälardrottningen, emerged from this period as a defining element of his contribution to Swedish Grace. His ability to blend Byzantine styles with modern sensibilities allowed him to transform civic architecture into something deeply symbolic.
Beyond the City Hall, his hand was visible in many public and religious settings throughout Sweden and abroad. His work included:
- Stained glass for Frövi Church in 1917.
- Tapestries, mosaics, and plasterwork at the Stockholm Concert Hall in 1924.
- Stained glass installations at St Mary's Church, Helsingborg, and Sankt Nicolai, Halmstad.
- Floor mosaics for Coventry Cathedral, completed in 1962.
A Versatile Hand
Forseth did not confine his creativity to the monumental. He possessed a versatility that allowed him to move between the grand scale of cathedral windows and the minute detail of Swedish postage stamps, which he designed starting in 1919. His reach extended into the domestic sphere through his designs for the Lidköping porcelain factory, proving that his aesthetic could inhabit both a cathedral and a dining table. This range of work—spanning from expressionist and abstract styles to more naive forms—demonstrated a lifelong engagement with the changing currents of 20th-century art.
He lived much of his later life in Bromma, where he resided in a villa at Hallingsbacken for over five decades. Upon his death in 1988, he left behind a significant collection of sketches and studies, many of which were donated to Västerleds church. His work remains held in important collections, including the National Museum and Moderna Museet in Stockholm.
