      Early Life, Family and Training

Etienne Vallée was born in Rouen, France, in 1735. His lineage carried a quiet weight of artistic history, as he was related on his mother's side to the family of the great painter Nicolas Poussin. This connection to a significant name in French art likely provided a sense of purpose as he began to find his own way through the visual arts.

His formal education began at the école des Beaux-Arts in Rouen. It was here that he studied under Descamps, learning the fundamental techniques that would define his early years. He showed a natural aptitude for the craft, making rapid progress through his studies. His talent was recognized early and often, as he was named one of the top laureates of the school on three separate occasions.

      Training in Paris and Italy

After making rapid progress in his studies in Rouen, Etienne Vallée moved to Paris to perfect his art. His talent did not go unnoticed, and he was welcomed into the workshop of Jean-Baptiste Marie Pierre, who served as the royal painter. This period of intense study and mentorship provided the foundation for his professional growth, allowing him to refine the technical skills required for history painting.

His dedication led to a significant achievement in 1759, when he won the 1e prix de l'Académie Royale de peinture et de sculpture. This recognition was a turning point in his life. With this prize secured, he set off for Italy, seeking to immerse himself in the classical traditions that would shape his later career.

      Life and Activity in Rome

Rome became a central part of Vallée's life, a place where he would remain for many years. His presence in the city was marked by significant social and professional recognition. He was admitted to the Maltese order, receiving the rank of Cavalier Donato, a distinction granted for services rendered to the order rather than through noble lineage. His integration into the local intellectual and artistic circles continued as he became a member of the Academy of Arcadia.

During his time in the city, Vallée found himself living in the Villa Mancini, a palace located on the Corso, a lively area of Roman social life. This location placed him in close proximity to the works of Giovanni Piranesi. Their connection proved to be a long-lasting professional partnership. For more than ten years, Vallée collaborated on Piranesi's works, assisting the aging engraver and architect. This period of shared labor allowed him to contribute to the visual record of the city's antiquities through his own skill as a painter and engraver.

Return to France and Later Years

After spending many years in Rome, where he had become a member of the Academy of Arcadia and held the rank of Cavalier Donato within the Maltese order, Vallée returned to his homeland. His homecoming was marked by significant professional recognition within the French art establishment. In 1789, he was admitted to the Académie de Peinture, a milestone that solidified his standing in the Parisian art scene.

To secure his place in the Academy, he produced a reception piece titled Return of the young Tobias and his meeting his mother and father. This work served as his formal introduction to the institution. He continued his life and work in Paris during these final years, maintaining his presence in the city's artistic circles.

The final chapter of his life came to a close in Paris. He died on 18 November 1802.

      Key Works and Artistic Output

The breadth of his output reflects a life spent navigating the demands of religious subjects and the decorative needs of grand interiors. One of his most significant early achievements was the painting The Miracle of the prophet Elijah in multiplying the oil for the poor widow, a work that earned him the Grand Prix. This success helped establish his reputation as a painter capable of handling profound biblical narratives with technical skill. Later, in 1774, he produced The Flight to Egypt, which found a place in the Chapel of the Immaculate Heart of Mary in Rome. His ability to move between large-scale historical compositions and more intimate scenes allowed him to find work in various settings, from sacred chapels to private residences.

His later years saw him exploring different themes, moving toward more secular or allegorical subject matter. Around 1790, he created Anacreon, Sappho, Eros and a Female Dancer, a work that suggests a shift in his creative focus. He also worked on the Adoration of the Shepherds about 1780, a subject that remained a staple of his repertoire. Beyond his large canvases, he was a skilled engraver and a creator of decorative schemes, often working on intricate designs for interior spaces. His drawings, such as those depicting monks distributing soup to the poor, show a quiet, observational side to his talent.
