A Life in Landscapes
Born in Palma de Mallorca in 1810, Fernando Ferrant Llausás spent much of his life shaped by the academic traditions of Spain. His early years were marked by the influence of the Academia de San Fernando, where he studied the foundations of his craft. Alongside his brother Luis, a history painter, he traveled to Rome, an experience that brought different perspectives back to his work in Spain. By 1843, his presence was felt in the public exhibitions held by the Real Academia de San Fernando, and he continued to participate in these displays through 1851.
His career moved within the circles of the Spanish court. He was named a court painter and served as the painter to King Francisco de Asís. This position brought him into the halls of power, yet his focus remained on the study of the land. In 1848, he officially entered the Real Academia de San Fernando, taking the place of Bartolomé Montalvo. He later took on the responsibility of teaching landscape drawing at both the Academy and the Escuela preparatoria de Caminos y Minas.
The Study of Nature
Ferrant Llausás focused his brush on romantic landscape painting. His approach was often characterized by a meticulous attention to individual objects within a scene. While some observers noted a certain precision in how he reproduced specific elements, others found his compositions to be more structured and formal than purely poetic. He sought to bring a sense of majesty to his canvases, drawing inspiration from the historical landscapes of masters like Poussin and Claude de Lorena, even if his own hand followed a different path.
His work appeared in significant settings during his lifetime:
- The 1855 Paris Universal Exposition.
- The first National Fine Arts Exhibition in 1856.
- The gallery of Infante Sebastián Gabriel in the Royal Palace.
- The collections of the Museo del Prado.
Final Days
The later years of his life were spent in the service of academic and royal institutions. In August 1855, a royal order appointed him as a professor of landscape drawing. However, his time as an educator was short. He fell ill with typhus at the Real Sitio de San Lorenzo. He passed away on August 21, 1856, in El Escorial. His legacy remains held within the permanent collections of Spain's most important museums, where his landscapes continue to show the careful, studied gaze he applied to the natural world.
