The Life and Teaching of Filip Romanowski
Born in Kraków, Poland, Filip Romanowski was a painter, lithographer, and drawing teacher. Following the early loss of his parents, he pursued a career in art, traveling to Vienna to study at the Academy of Fine Arts. During his time there, he resided with the painter Jan Chrzciciel Lampi. After leaving Vienna in 1818, he settled in Warsaw, where he dedicated much of his life to both painting and education.
His professional career in Warsaw included roles as a drawing and calligraphy instructor at the Warsaw Departmental School, an assistant at the Library of the University of Warsaw, and a deputy at the Warsaw Lyceum. Later in life, he held positions at the Second Real Gymnasium in Warsaw and the Noble Institute. In 1846, he published a work titled "Theory of the elemental principles of the science of drawing considered from an artistic point of view."
Artistic Legacy and Works
Romanowski was highly regarded by his contemporaries for his skill and talent, though he was often noted for exhibiting copies of existing works rather than his own original compositions. His repertoire included various portraits, such as those of Gen. J. Chłopicki and K. Karski, as well as large-scale works like his portrait of Mikołaj I. Other notable pieces include "The Birth of Venus" and "The Capture of the Trenches at Somosierra."
His most prominent surviving work, "View from the Castle Square towards Krakowskie Przedmieście," is held in the National Museum in Warsaw. He passed away in Warsaw and is buried in the Powązki Cemetery.
