The Artistic Evolution of Freda Robertshaw
Born in Sydney, Australia, Freda Robertshaw began her formal training at the East Sydney Technical College, where she studied drawing, life drawing, oil painting, and watercolour. Seeking to master the complexities of figure painting, she became an apprentice and partner to Charles Meere. During this period, her work was characterized by a studied neoclassical style, focusing on the human figure through classical modelling and composition. Her 1944 work, Standing Nude, a self-portrait, marked a significant departure from Meere's influence and remains a notable piece in Australian art history, having been featured in exhibitions such as Modern Australian Women.
Throughout her career, Robertshaw's subject matter shifted from these neoclassical figures toward more modernist and moody landscapes. She also experimented with surrealism, as seen in her work Composition. Beyond her fine art practice, she maintained a long-term freelance relationship with the advertising firm L. B. Rennie. Her diverse body of work is held in several prestigious institutions, including the Art Gallery of New South Wales and the National Gallery of Australia.
