A Life Shaped by Munich and Family
Friedrich Dürck grew up in the shadow of his uncle, Joseph Stieler, the royal Bavarian court painter. His father, once a wealthy merchant, had seen his fortune vanish during the post-Napoleonic era, eventually finding stability as an inspector at the Hubertusburg hunting lodge. It was during these early years that a wounded soldier, staying with the family, is said to have stirred Dürck's interest in art. His first lessons took place at the Leipzig Art Academy, but it was his uncle’s 1822 invitation to Munich that changed his path. Though the director of the Mannheim Antiquities Hall initially found him too young for formal entry, Dürck joined the Munich Academy of Fine Arts in 1824.
For years, he worked alongside Stieler, helping with portraits and recreating well-known works, including a version of Stieler's portrait of Goethe. He produced both small and large versions of his uncle's commissions. By 1828, he began exhibiting under his own name, establishing himself among the Munich nobility and merchant class. His travels took him to Italy between 1836 and 1837, where he spent time in Rome and Florence.
Portraits and Royal Commissions
Dürck's hand was often called upon by the courts of Europe. In 1849, he traveled to the Swedish court to paint members of the royal family, and in 1854, he accepted an invitation to the Austrian court in Vienna. His work for the Bavarian court remained a central part of his career. King Ludwig I commissioned him for two specific portraits for the Gallery of Beauties in Nymphenburg Palace: Anna von Greiner and Carlotta Freiin von Breidbach-Bürresheim. These two pieces are notable as the only works in that collection not painted by Stieler.
His repertoire included several notable figures:
- Queen Theresa of Bavaria
- King Ludwig I
- Anna von Greiner
- Carlotta Freiin von Breidbach-Bürresheim
Later Years and Artistic Shift
As time passed, Dürck's focus shifted away from the strictures of portraiture. After 1860, he began to spend more time on genre and costume pictures, reflecting the tastes of that era. His work remains present in collections such as those in Weimar, supported by the Klassik Stiftung Weimar. He lived much of his life in Munich, where he eventually passed away at the age of 75. He was laid to rest in Munich's Alter Südfriedhof Cemetery.
