The Life and Artistic Journey of Georg Broel
Born in Bad Honnef, Germany, Georg Broel was a visual artist, painter, printmaker, and draftsperson. His early professional life included working as a timber merchant apprentice in Munich and Regen. He pursued formal training at the Kunstgewerbeschule München under Maximilian Dasio and later studied in the painting class of Hermann Groeber at the Münchener Akademie. Broel was a member of the Freie Gruppe Düsseldorf and the Münchner Künstlergenossenschaft. During the First World War, he served as an officer of the List-Regiment in Flanders. His life was marked by significant personal transitions, including his marriage to the Russian artist Alexandra Korsakoff and their subsequent divorce in 1919. He spent much of his later life in Munich, where he passed away after suffering a stroke.
Artistic Themes and Technical Mastery
The work of Georg Broel is characterized by a profound connection to nature, with his primary subjects being landscapes, particularly those of the Siebengebirge and the Alpspitzmassiv. His diverse output includes paintings, drawings, etchings, and exlibris. In his etchings, Broel utilized the acid etching process to create controlled, powerful lines, often producing limited editions that featured unique remarques or small drawings. He was also a prolific creator of exlibris, producing 99 of these works between 1907 and 1935, which often depicted dense, dark forests and expansive, bright valleys. His graphic works were sometimes published in cycles, such as the Frühlings-Sinfonie and An die Heimat.
