A Life Forged in Labor and Light

Gevorg Grigoryan lived a life that began with the heavy weight of necessity. Born into a poor family in Tiflis, he lost his father when he was only six years old. To survive, the young boy worked many different jobs from the age of seven. He spent his days as a fuel oil warehouse worker, a courier, and a newspaper distributor. He even labored in glassmaking and sold fruit and books at kiosks. These early years of hard, physical work shaped the man who would later seek solace in the quiet study of beauty.

His path toward art began in earnest between 1916 and 1920, when he studied at the School of Painting and Sculpture of the Caucasian Society for the Encouragement of Fine Arts in Tiflis. He was drawn to the classics of the Renaissance, finding deep connection in the works of Giotto di Bondone, Leonardo da Vinci, and Raphael Santi. In 1921, seeking further growth, he moved to Moscow to study at Vkhutemas under the supervision of Lyubov Popova. This period brought a new way of seeing, blending his interest in old masters with the emerging energy of modern art.

      The Shadows of Persecution

The middle years of Grigoryan’s life were marked by profound hardship and a struggle against political pressure. From 1948 to 1957, he faced a period of isolation after being expelled from the Georgian Artists' Union. The era was one of great personal despair; in a moment of hopelessness caused by this persecution, he burned 300 of his own paintings. This act of destruction remains one of the most somber chapters of his biography, reflecting the intense emotional toll taken by the era's social and political climate.

Despite these setbacks, his creative will remained intact. In 1962, he moved to Yerevan, a change that eventually allowed for a period of renewed visibility. By 1965, he held his first solo exhibition at the Union of Artists of Armenia. His later years were spent alongside his wife, Diana Ukleba, a Georgian artist and poetess, in a life shared through both art and companionship.

A Legacy in Color and Line

Grigoryan’s artistic output was diverse, spanning portraits, still lifes, and landscapes. His style was characterized by a unique color palette and a clear, linear structure. He often used restrained colors to express deep, sincere emotions, once stating that he painted with his nerves and blood. His graphic works were particularly notable for their wider chromatic spectrum and dynamic compositions.

His work frequently reflected the cultural atmosphere of Tbilisi and the history of the Armenian people. Some of his notable pieces include:

      • Still Life with a White Napkin (1922)
      • Portrait of Haykuhi (1922)
      • Young Charents (1926)
      • Death of the Leader (1927)
      • Tiflis Landscape (1966)
      • My Mother and I (1972)

Today, his creative heritage is preserved in several important institutions. His works can be found in the Gevorg Grigoryan Studio-Museum in Yerevan, the National Gallery of Armenia, the Modern Art Museum of Yerevan, and the Zimmerli Museum. The studio-museum, which became a branch of the National Gallery of Armenia, serves as a place to remember the man behind the brush.
