A life in Brussels
Gustave Walckiers lived much of his life within the streets of Brussels. Born in 1831, he spent his early years in the city before studying at the Académie royale des Beaux-Arts de Bruxelles between 1851 and 1853. His time there was shaped by the lessons of François Bossuet and Jules Breton. Though he once sat for notary exams at the Université Libre de Bruxelles in 1855, his path led away from the law and toward a studio in his birthplace.
His personal life remained quiet. He married Valérie Herlant in 1858, and the couple had no children. He was part of a family deeply rooted in the local landscape, being the son of Pierre-Joseph Walckiers and Jeanne Devadder, and the brother of Sébastien Walckiers.
The view from the canvas
His work often focused on the architecture and atmosphere of European cities. He had a particular way of looking at Brussels, capturing sites like the Place du Petit Sablon, Rue Royale, and the Boulevard du Nord. In some pieces, such as his depiction of Rue Royale, he did not strictly follow the physical layout of the houses, choosing instead to rearrange elements of the street. This approach sat within the realist school, though later in his life, his brushwork began to show traces of luminism.
Beyond his home city, his eyes traveled to other places. He painted views of Venice, including the Doge’s Palace and Punta della Dogana, as well as scenes from Malines, Binche, and Berne. His subjects often included:
- Townscapes and urban vistas
- Landscapes featuring many figures, a habit learned from his teacher
- Specific Belgian landmarks like the Hôtel de Ville d’Alost
Exhibitions and presence
Walckiers was a regular presence in the artistic circles of his time. From 1872 until his death in 1891, he was a member of the Cercle Artistique et Littéraire de Bruxelles, which later became the Cercle Gaulois. He shared his work at various large-scale events, including the International Exhibition of London in 1874 and the Centennial Exhibition in Philadelphia in 1876. His paintings have found their way into several permanent collections, such as the Musée des Beaux-Arts de Gand and the Musée Royal des Beaux-Arts de Belgique.
