The Life and Career of Hans Gross
Born in Pahlen, Germany, Hans Gross was a painter and graphic artist who also served as a university teacher. His formal artistic training began at the Kunstakademie Königsberg, following his service as a soldier during the First World War. After being wounded, he continued his studies at the Kunstakademie Weimar, where he was a student of Fritz Mackensen. His professional journey included exhibitions in Kiel, Düsseldorf, Elberfeld, Hamburg, and Berlin. Later in his career, he held a position at the Nordische Kunsthochschule in Bremen, serving as a deputy director and, for a brief period, as acting director.
Artistic Recognition and Historical Context
The work of Hans Gross is characterized by expressionism. During the period of the National Socialist regime, his expressionist pieces were classified as "degenerate art," leading to the confiscation and destruction of many of his works from various collections, including the Kunsthalle Kiel and the Städtische Bildergalerie Wuppertal-Elberfeld. Despite these challenges, he continued to work in various capacities, including serving as a cultural official. His artistic output included large-scale frescoes located in Kiel, the Landratsamt Flensburg, and the Museum Meldorf. One of his notable works is the Marsh Landscape on the West Coast.
