A Life Rooted in Skåne
Born on May 25, 1910, in Malmö, Sweden, Hans Larsson grew up in the heart of the Skåne region. His early years were shaped by a deep connection to his surroundings, a bond that would later manifest in his paintings of landscapes and nature. He began his formal training at a young age, studying at Märta af Ekenstam’s Skånska målarskolan during 1923, 1924, and 1931. To expand his understanding of the craft, he also attended the Tekniska yrkesskolan in Malmö between 1927 and 1930.
His search for new perspectives led him far from his home in Malmö. He traveled to study the art of Berlin, Dresden, and Munich, absorbing different approaches to light and form. Between 1928 and 1937, he lived and worked in Copenhagen. During this time, he found that the Danish art community was often more receptive to his developing style than the circles in his native Sweden.
The Language of Color and Form
Larsson’s approach to painting was defined by a focus on color, earning him a place among the notable colorists of the Skåne region. His work often drew inspiration from the heavy, expressive styles of George Rouault and Emile Nolde. This influence is visible in his use of oil on canvas, where he explored themes ranging from still lifes and portraits to figurative works and biblically inspired subjects.
His technical repertoire was diverse, as he moved between different mediums to capture the essence of his subjects:
In his later years, particularly around 1972, he produced sets of black ink lithographs. These works showed a refined control over line and tone, much like the precision found in his earlier studies.
A Lasting Presence in Collections
Throughout his career, Larsson participated in numerous exhibitions across Sweden and Denmark. He showed his work at the Galerie Moderne in Stockholm, the Malmö Museum, and the Skånska konstmuseum in Lund. His reach extended even further, with group shows in New York and Oslo, allowing a wider audience to see his interpretations of the natural world.
Today, his paintings are held in several important institutions, ensuring that his vision remains accessible to those studying Swedish art history. Notable collections include:
- National Museum, Stockholm
- Moderna Museet, Stockholm
- Malmö Museum
- Statens Museum for Kunst, Copenhagen
- Cincinnati Art Museum
- Tel-Aviv Art Museum
- Leigh Yawkey Woodson Art Museum
Hans Larsson passed away in 1973 in Malmö at the age of 63. He left behind a body of work that remains a significant part of the Skåne artistic tradition.
