      Early Life, Family and Training

Helve Viidalepp was born on 20 December 1921 in Paide. She grew up in a household where art was a familiar presence, being the daughter of the artist August Roosileht. Her early years were shaped by the quiet rhythms of Paide, where she began her formal education at Paide Primary School between 1929 and 1935. This foundation led her to the Paide Progymnasium, which she attended from 1935 to 1938, before she eventually graduated from Paide Secondary School in 1941.

Her path toward a life in art became clearer as she pursued higher studies. She spent time at the Tallinn School of Fine and Applied Arts and the Pallas school between 1943 and 1944. Later, she moved on to the Tartu State Art Institute, where she studied under the guidance of Johannes Võerahansu. By the time she graduated from the institute in 1948, she had developed the technical skills that would define her later years as a painter and teacher.

      Professional Career and Affiliations

After completing her studies, Helve Viidalepp began a period of teaching, sharing her knowledge at the Tartu State Art Institute between 1948 and 1950. This time in Tartu was a significant chapter in her professional life, allowing her to engage deeply with the academic environment of the era. During these years, she was also a member of the Kunstnike Liit, having joined the union in 1948. Her connection to the Pallas circle placed her within a specific community of creators, a network that helped shape the artistic landscape of her time.

Later, her life moved toward Tallinn, where she worked as a freelance artist. This period of independence allowed her to pursue her own vision without the constraints of a formal institutional role. Her personal life was also closely tied to the art community through her marriage to Ants Viidalepp, making her the first wife of the artist. She remained active in the Estonian art scene, contributing to the collective memory of the country's creative history through her presence in both academic and independent circles.

      Key Works and Artistic Output

Viidalepp’s paintings often reflected a quiet focus on the people and natural details of her surroundings. In 1957, she produced Ema portree, a work that captures a sense of maternal presence. By 1963, her brushwork turned toward portraiture in Helgi, a piece characterized by dark hair and a red dress against a patterned background. Her ability to find meaning in the small things is evident in her later still lifes and landscapes, such as the 1970 painting Potilill.

As her career progressed, she continued to explore both the human form and the natural world. Her later years saw the creation of Kevadine kimp in 1974 and Kanarbik in 1975. These works, along with her earlier studies, show a steady hand and a commitment to her subjects. Her output also included several other notable pieces:

      • Lilleherned
      • Autoportree
      • An untitled work from about 1959
