Henry MacManus was an Irish painter and teacher born in Monaghan. Raised in the Royal Hibernian Military School, he was the son of a Catholic soldier who died in service. His professional journey saw him exhibiting with the Royal Academy, the British Institute, and the Old Water-colour Society. His artistic output included historical scenes and depictions of everyday Irish life, such as May-day at Finglas, Co. Dublin (1839) and An Irish Market-day, Ballybay, Co. Monaghan (1841). He also contributed illustrations to books like Hall's Ireland and Carleton's Traits and Stories of the Irish Peasants.

Following his resignation from the Glasgow institution in 1848, he moved to Dublin, where he led the Dublin School of Art until 1862. During his tenure in Dublin, he established classes for women and organized the Royal Dublin Society exhibition of arts and industries.
