      Early Life and Artistic Training

Jaroslav Kapec was born on August 30, 1924, in Ostrava, Czech Republic. Growing up in this industrial landscape, he would eventually find his way to the capital to pursue a formal education in the arts. His path as a painter and graphic artist led him to the Prague Academy of Fine Arts, where he spent much of his formative professional years.

Between 1951 and 1957, Kapec focused his studies at the Academy. During this intensive period, he worked under the guidance of Vlastimil Rada and Miloslav Holý. These years of training helped shape his technical foundation as he developed his skills in painting and drawing. His time in Prague provided the discipline necessary for the diverse range of work he would later produce, from graphic art to object creation.

After completing his primary studies, Kapec continued to refine his craft. In 1958, he sought further instruction under Karel Souček. This period of learning helped prepare him for his eventual return to his native Ostrava, where he would spend much of his life as an artist and art educator.

      Artistic Style and Techniques

Jaroslav Kapec was a versatile creator who moved between the roles of painter, graphic artist, draftsman, and object creator. His approach to a canvas changed as he matured, eventually leading him to move away from traditional painting toward a specific method of drawing on a white base. This shift marked a significant departure from his earlier works, signaling a change in how he chose to interact with his materials and the space they occupied.

His visual language was defined by a deliberate rejection of spatial illusion. Rather than trying to create a window into a deep, three-dimensional world, he neutralized the action framework of his compositions. He preferred to focus on figural or linear elements that emphasized the surface itself. This stripped-back approach allowed him to explore a very personal vision of the world, often expressed through a striking harmony of black and red. These colors became a recurring presence in his work, grounding his compositions in a stark, intentional palette.

His technical evolution was deeply tied to his search for a new mode of expression. By moving away from the complexities of traditional perspective, he was able to focus on the essential shapes and lines that defined his subjects. This focus on the structural and the symbolic allowed him to tackle heavy, philosophical themes through a simplified, direct visual language.

      Significant Works and Artistic Achievements

Throughout his career, Kapec sought to answer deep, personal questions through his canvas. One of his most significant achievements was the painting Triumph of Life, which he completed in 1966. This work was a turning point for him, marking a moment when he moved away from traditional painting toward a new mode of expression, often working on a white base. His ability to synthesize complex compositional principles into a monumental form allowed him to explore the weight of human existence in a very direct way.

His earlier years showed a deep connection to his surroundings and the human condition. In 1962, he created Zločin a trest, followed by Ostrava in 1963, a work that reflected his ties to his native landscape. The mid-1960s were particularly productive, as he produced several works that explored tension and balance, such as Horizontála a vertikála, Tíha, and Boj světla a tmy, all in 1964. These pieces often dealt with the struggle between opposing forces, a theme that continued as he moved into the late sixties.

As his style evolved, he continued to tackle heavy subject matter. In 1967, he produced Zápas bílé, a work that fits into a period of intense creative output. His later years also saw him turning toward more spiritual or illustrative endeavors, including work on religious texts. His output remained steady, moving from the heavy themes of his youth toward a more focused, perhaps more distilled, way of seeing the world.

      Later Years and Death

After completing his formal studies, Kapec chose to return to his native Ostrava. He remained connected to the landscape and the atmosphere of his home region throughout his life. His later years saw him turning his hand to the delicate task of illustration, translating complex spiritual themes into visual form. In 1981, he provided the illustrations for the church hymnal Píseň nového života. This was followed by a significant undertaking between 1984 and 1985, when he illustrated the Czech translation of the Evangelium dle Jana.

His commitment to his craft and his personal vision continued until the end of his life. Jaroslav Kapec passed away on 27.11.1998 in Havířov.
