      The Sound of Gothenburg

Gothenburg, 1798. Johanna Elisabeth Bauck enters a world defined by the rhythmic pulse of music and commerce. Her father, Johan Christoffer Bauck, moves through the city as a wholesaler and an active member of the Harmoniska sällskapet. In this household, melody is a constant presence. By age six, Jeanna is already receiving tuition in piano, later expanding her studies to include voice and violin. The air in her childhood home carries the weight of musical theory and practice.

The transition from student to performer arrives with startling speed. At fourteen, she stands on a stage alongside the German cellist Bernhard Romberg. She is no longer merely a listener; she is a participant in the city's professional musical life. Her development follows a path of rigorous training under Georg Günther, an organist and theorist, and later through travels to Hamburg. In 1814, the sounds of the harp and voice lessons in Germany reshape her technical capabilities.

      A Multi-Faceted Presence

Jeanna Åkerman’s identity is not singular. While she is often recognized as a solo singer and pianist, her hands also hold brushes and pens. She moves between the roles of composer, organizer, and visual artist. Her musical output includes eight published songs for solo voice and piano, featuring texts by Esaias Tegnér and Karl August Nicander. These works appear in collections such as the Nordmanna-Harpan magazine. They possess a technical structure that remains thorough despite the conventional frameworks of the era.

Her visual work takes a different form. As a painter, she focuses on oil paintings, specifically capturing landscapes from the district around Rosendal Palace. Her studies in Dresden during the 1820s under Fredric Werner provide the foundation for this aesthetic pursuit. A few of these works survive today, held in collections like the Nationalmuseum in Stockholm and Rosendal Palace.

      Leadership and Legacy

The later years of her life are marked by institutional influence. In 1855, she takes the helm as the leader and chairperson of the Måndagssångöfvningssällskapet, a mixed choir. This organization eventually merges with the Harmoniska sällskapet. She navigates the social complexities of her time, where a woman of her standing might be labeled an "amateur" or a "music lover" in public programs to avoid the scrutiny of professional labels. Yet, her skill remains on par with the professionals of her age.

The final chapter of her life concludes in Dresden. She leaves behind a legacy defined by:

      • Her leadership in Gothenburg's musical organizations.
      • Published vocal compositions for piano accompaniment.
      • Landscape oil paintings preserved in Swedish royal and national collections.
