A Life Between Rome and New York
Born in 1839, John Linton Chapman was an American painter and photographer. The son of the painter John Gadsby Chapman, he moved with his family to Europe in 1848, staying in London, Paris, and Florence before settling in Rome in 1850. Alongside his brother Conrad, he studied art under their father. During his time in Rome, Chapman focused on producing paintings of Italian peasants, landscapes, and various scenes. He was particularly known for creating numerous versions of the Via Appia. In addition to his painting, he was a skilled practitioner of photography in Rome.
In 1878, Chapman left Italy and returned to the United States, eventually living in New York and its environs. His later years were marked by financial hardship and poverty, a result of living beyond his means. Despite his talent, he was described by contemporaries as "lazy and unambitious," often painting repeated versions of the same works to make a living. He died in Westchester County, New York, on May 2, 1905.
