The Life and Artistic Evolution of Joseph Zaritsky
Born in Boryspil, in the Poltava Oblast of the Russian Empire, Joseph Zaritsky studied art at the Academy of Arts in Kiev from 1910 to 1914. Following the events of 1919, his family moved to Kalarash, Bessarabia, where he produced small-scale watercolors of rural landscapes and portraits of his wife. In 1923, Zaritsky immigrated to the Land of Israel, settling first in Jerusalem and later moving to Tel Aviv in the mid-1920s. His early works in Jerusalem included watercolor landscapes and depictions of houses in Jerusalem and Safad. During his time in Tel Aviv, he focused on series of landscapes and portraits, including a series of watercolors titled Flowers on the Windowsill painted between 1937 and 1944.
Modernism and Abstract Expression
Zaritsky was a central figure in the development of modern art in the Land of Israel, notably cofounding the "Ofakim Hadashim" group. In 1948, he was a key member of the "New Horizons" group, which emphasized abstract art. His style evolved toward what is described as "lyrical abstraction," characterized by compositions of paint stains and lines that moved away from the direct description of nature. His work often explored the relationship between light and dark, and the translation of reality into the internal laws of a painting. Throughout his career, he received several honors, including the Dizengoff Prize for Painting in 1942, the Israel Prize in 1959, and the Sandberg Prize for Israeli Art in 1968.
