A Life in Visual Art and Film
Joyce Wieland was a Canadian visual artist and cultural activist who utilized diverse media to explore feminism and Canadian identity. Born in Toronto, Ontario, Canada, she began her career as a painter in the 1950s. Her artistic journey led her to New York City in 1962, where she expanded her practice to include new materials and mixed media. During this period, she also rose to prominence as an experimental filmmaker, with her works being shown at institutions such as the Museum of Modern Art in New York.
Her work was characterized by a wide range of materials and media, including film, collages, sculptural assemblages, and fabric-based objects like quilts. In 1971, she held the first solo exhibition by a living Canadian female artist at the National Gallery of Canada, titled True Patriot Love. Her output was noted for being small but receiving considerable attention.
